I’ve been a DIY drug maker the past few weeks.

I have not been selling or dealing or anything like that — but I am going to try and convince you why Spriulina is a supplement that you should look into for yourself and your family.

which I suppose makes me a Drug Pusher.

Hang on. Let me go find a bandanna or beanie or something…

I’ve been reading about the wonders of Spirulina for about a year now.  I first heard about it from the Model Health Show — the host, Shawn, talks about it an awful lot.

But he’s young and hip and lifts weights — and I’m a 40 year old suburban mom who puts on a yoga video to watch while munching chocolate chips straight out of the bag…

(they are 70% cocoa!!  that means it’s super food, right??)

anyhow.  I was skeptical.

And then I kept hearing about it here and there in various circles.  I even put a container in my basket at Whole Foods and walked all around the store with it before depositing it near the canned cat food.

(this is not a problem, or anywhere near a bad thing, IMO.  I regularly abandon things in stores and have decided that I am single-handedly keeping people in their jobs.  A robot would never be able to find the stuff I change my mind about while wandering stores…)

after reading reviews for 3 days straight, I settled on this brand.

Right around Easter, a stomach bug hit our house and that pushed me over the edge to revamp the Flora and Fauna in our guts (I already take a daily probiotic and the kids drink acidopholous supplements..) and so since I’m the Decider in the family  —  we all needed to take Spirulina.

Except.

Have you tasted it?

Have you smelled it?

Spirulina. It might be good for you, but it tastes and smells HORRIFIC. That is because it is algae. So it is essentially pond scum. And in general, humans do not wish to ingest Pond Scum.

It does not smell pretty.  Trust me.

I tried.  I tried putting a dash in oatmeal, in smoothies, in whipped cream.  It was a no go.

It actually has a weird bit of oil or something in the texture so it floats on top.  All the people who write online and say that you get used to the flavor and it’s fine and blah blah blah are either lying or have some sort of Dinosaur blood that makes them OK with ingesting pond scum.

So I decided to get creative and ordered my own empty gelatin capsules.  I am not sure if the motivation was Our Health or not wanting to waste $15 on the container of Spirulina powder….

the jury is actually still diliberrating on that one, but I’m going to go with Our Health to be submitted on record.

😉

Right before Easter weekend I called a bunch of pharmacies and went to GNC to buy empty gelatin capsules.  I was not able to find them locally, but found a huge bag on Amazon for $12.99 for 1000 capsules.

I opted for the 00 size — which is the largest.  I’m happy I got this size because they are easy to fill with a tiny spoon and click together nicely.

Don’t worry that in the description it says that they are ideal for a Large Dog.  I know you are not that.

🙂

As for our health — it’s only been a few weeks.  I have been taking 3 of my homemade capsules a day and the big kids (age 13 and 16) have each been taking one a day.

I have found no ill side effects — although I do burp up an algae flavor an hour or so after taking them — probably I should take with water but instead swallow with my morning coffee.

I can’t tell if I have more energy.  I think I do, but I’m definitely one who is easily persuaded with the Placebo Effect.

definitely do your research and come to your own conclusions.  This is the favorite article that I’ve found online that explains everything I’ve read in the most comprehensive way.

the things that sold me the most were:

Spirulina is higher in protein than any other food. It contains 60 to 70% best quality protein, which is already predigested, making it more digestible than any other source. For example, beef protein is digestible in only 20 percent whereas spirulina protein is 95 percent digestible! It means that much less of spirulina is required in order to provide our body with sufficient amount of protein.

and:

Since spirulina is very high in chlorophyll, beta carotene and various antioxidants which can regenerate the delicate lining of the gastrointestinal tract it can be also successfully used in preventing and treating people who suffer from gastric ulcers, gastritis, or other effects of excessive acid production in the stomach.

and finally this:

Spirulina is an excellent prebiotic agent as it is very effective in controlling the growth of harmful bacteria and candida albicans (yeast) in our digestive system which is critical for optimal digestion of food and nutritional absorption. The fact that spirulina supports the growth of healthy bacterial flora in our colon and boosts our immune system is extremely important with regards to the colon health, GABA, serotonin and B vitamins production, prevention of many autoimmune diseases, reduction of candida albicans, or condition of our immune system.

So there you go!  Please let me know if you give it a try or if you’ve already tried it on your own.

here are the best prices I’ve found for the Powder and the Capsules.  (those are affiliate links)

hope all is well with you — have a great day,

xoxo steph
